Corporate Philanthropy: Doing Well By Doing Good
By Dann Lies (Lees)
A typical response during a recession is to circle the wagons and conserve resources. In the face of an uncertain economic future, some businesses are either cutting back on their philanthropic efforts or not responding at all. While we certainly understand this thinking, we'd like to share some thoughts on how some businesses are becoming more creative with their philanthropy while others are actually increasing their giving. Rachel Hutchisson, Director of Corporate Relations & Philanthropy of Blackbaud says, "From my perspective and that of the company, our corporate philanthropy is more important than ever. We see serious need in our community, especially when it comes to meeting basic human needs (i.e. food banks, shelters, etc.)." Some innovative ways to continue supporting your community include:
- Encourage employees to take advantage of a matching gift program. If you don't currently match gifts, it's easy to set up and you can establish whatever limits you choose.
- Provide employees with paid time off to serve their favorite not-for-profit.
- Sponsor an annual employee run, fundraiser or community outreach day.
- Allow employees to wear jeans on Fridays to raise money for areas of need. The company can even match funds raised on these days.
- Take whatever good or service your company provides and turn it into an opportunity to raise money for a charity. For instance, if you are a restaurant, advertise that a portion of proceeds on a certain day will go toward philanthropy. Or if you make a product that can be used by a charity, donate items regularly throughout the year.
Our not-for-profit organizations play a vital role in our communities. They care for those in need and use their resources to help struggling individuals get back on their feet. These are important reasons why companies should try to either maintain their level of giving or find new ways to continue supporting local charities.
In short, corporate philanthropy is just good business. In a recent article entitled, Bad Times, Good Deed's, the author, Rachel Cohen, makes this observation: "Corporate philanthropy programs are becoming increasingly popular among businesses, and for good reason. These programs are a great way for organizations to give back to the community in which they operate and support causes related to their businesses. There are also many benefits to the organization as well. They strengthen employee relations, serve as a powerful recruitment tool and can enhance the organization's public relations strategy."
At Hendrickson Business Advisors, we strongly encourage our entire team to get involved as board/committee members and volunteers. In addition, we adopt one pro-bono client each year and provide them with business advice at no cost. We strongly feel that when businesses focus on giving back they become a part of the social fabric of the community and create a reservoir of goodwill. So, during this holiday season when attention is automatically drawn to the spirit of giving, make plans to include corporate philanthropy in your company's future. Your company will do well by doing good!
